Weds, 1/3/01 | Visit La Jolla Cove and Scripps Aquarium. | |
Well,
today we had planned to take a trip to Julian and Viejas, however, a massive forest fire
had closed off Viejas entirely and blocked part of the freeway! Thick brownish-grey
smoke covered the entire sky, right down to the beach. Teeny flakes of white ash
fell everywhere and dusted the cars like powdered sugar and made us all look like we had
dandruff! The sun kept trying to get through the thick layers, but didn't quite make
it 'til sunset! Anyway, we just changed our plans and decided to mosey on up to La Jolla (say "hoi'-ya") Cove which is quite near where we live. We enjoyed the seals on the beach, pelicans and friendly squirrels. The kids met a man sitting on the sea wall making teeny scooters with wire and he made them all one each! Then we carried on up to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. There we saw impressive displays of sardines, giant octopus, lobster, California King crabs, jellyfish, sharks, seahorses plus a giant tank with 70,000 gallons of water! We also had fun with the big "walk-in" inflatable whale! Later, Fiona, Lee and I took a peek in the "Discovery Station" where many sea anemones and starfish were on display; visitors were allowed to touch some of this sealife. We asked Lee if he wanted to go first at touching the hard, prickly anemone; "It wasn't my idea!" he said. Tee hee. So, I gently roused the starfish with Fiona's sunglasses... (just in case it sprung to life and sucked us all into the tank!). Oops, I've been watching too many wierd movies. This was Mum and Gary's last day; we all said our goodbyes tonight as they were taking off early in the morning. We enjoyed a dinner of homemade chili and rice. |
Look out! You're getting swallowed!
Big hugs for mummy!
